Classroom Expectations
Homework:
* All students are expected to read at least 20 min./night
* All students are expected to work on improving their Math skills for a minimum of 15 min./night
* All band students are expected to practice 20 min./night 5 days a week
* Occasionally, course work/projects will be assigned as homework. In these instances students are welcome to adjust their homework accordingly, reducing their reading and/or math on any given night.
* In the event homework—for whatever reason—becomes a problem at any time throughout the year, or if you happen to find your son/daughter regularly spending more than 35 min. a night on homework, please contact me. Homework at the grade 7 level should not be a burden to either students or parents, but rather support student learning.
Accelerated Reader:
SESS runs the Accelerated Reader (AR) program in all of its classrooms. This means that as students progress throughout the year students are expected to read AR books and accumulate AR points. A variety of AR books can be found in the library and Div 24 has a computer for students to regularly write AR tests. All students are expected to follow the code of conduct as outlined in their AR duotangs and read a variety of reading material and genres.
By the end of September all students are expected to have accumulated at least one AR point, proving that they are familiar with and capable of engaging independently with the AR expectations based on their Star Reader results. AR is administered differently to different students; since students’ reading abilities are variable, student AR expectations vary. Do not hesitate to contact me if you feel your son/daughter’s AR program needs to be adjusted.
Star Reader:
All students in SESS, as part of the AR program, write the Star Reader test in September, December/January and March/April. This diagnostic comprehension test is one of several measurements used to help teachers establish students’ reading baselines and programs. Parents, students and teachers must alway be cautious when interpreting single pieces of data, as it is patterns of performance over time and between various reading challenges that more reliably indicate a student’s ability to read and comprehend. Early in June, all students write a final Star Test to help determine year long growth. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any concern about your child's Star Reader results.
